Lesbian Name:
Ophelia
Position(s):
Flanker, #8
About Me:
One day a group of handsome men visited my leper colony and enlisted me to play rugby. My life has never been the same since.
How long I have been playing:
Spring 2004.
Favourite Rugby Moment:
Surprisingly, it just so happens, I was the loudmouth standing in front of the podium microphone when Ironsides was presented with the Inaugural Bingham Bowl in 2006. The local news cameras were filming us. I took the trophy, held it up and said, "By the power vested in me by The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I now pronounce you: team and bowl."
Admittedly, I just wanted it to get us some press. Back then, gay marriage was brand new and I figured would make a good sound bite. And it worked! Film at Eleven! When moments like that are preserved they call it gay Americana.
What does playing rugby with the IRONSIDES mean to me?:
IIronsides is an IGRAB team, and therefore it means I'm carrying on the legacy of Mark Bingham. He is such a hero and an inspiration. I have been fortunate enough to form a friendship with his mother Alice over the years. She's amazing. I always look forward to seeing her at The Bingham Cup. She's become such a brilliant spokesperson for the tragedy of 9/11. Her message is always incredibly life-affirming.
What would I say to someone thinking of joining?:
Well, to be truthful, I've been on the Lesbian Naming Committee since its inception, so when someone tells me they're thinking of joining Ironsides, I immediately start to contemplate their lesbian name. |
