About Me:
I grew up in the Midwest in one of those we-live-and-breathe-high-school-football kinds of towns. But I was never very athletic. I was the opposite of athletic: I was slow and uncoordinated. I was one of those kids who always looked for an excuse to ditch gym class... except when we were bowling.
I discovered rugby during a business trip to New Zealand a few years ago. The game was on television 24 hours a day and the Sharks happened to be staying at my hotel. I didn't understand the game at all, but like most rugby newbies, I was drawn in and fascinated by the scrums. I wanted to scrum. I wanted to play rugby.
After I moved to Boston a couple years ago, I stumbled upon the Ironsides' facebook page and decided to challenge myself with something new. Although I was really nervous (and still slow and uncoordinated), I showed up for the boot camp and fell in love with the action and the team.
How long I have been playing:
Since August 2011
Favourite Rugby Moment:
Every time I meet another rugby player, that's my favorite rugby moment. No matter whether the guy plays for my team, an opposing team, or some team I had never heard of, there's something about playing and surviving the game of rugby that fosters humility and respect and bonds us all as brothers. It's an amazing thing.
What does playing rugby with the IRONSIDES mean to me?:
My experience with the Boston Ironsides has been about growth. I can't count the number of times more-experienced players have pulled me aside during practice to help me improve my tackling or rucking technique, or helped me during a game to get in the right position or to know when to join a ruck (or to stay the hell out of a ruck). I still have lots to learn and lots more growing to do as a player, but I can't imagine a better group of guys to share the journey with.
What would I say to someone thinking of joining?:
Uhmmm... Rugby players are hot. Don't you want to be one? |
